    9-1-1 Information and Helpful Hints

If you do not have an emergency, you are asked to call our non-emergency line at 248-634-8221.

Here are some helpful hints for calling 9-1-1. Reading these now may help you when an actual emergency occurs.

Remain calm. If the dispatcher or call taker cannot understand what you are reporting, it slows down the response.

Be prepared to verify phone number and location. In most cases, the address you are calling from is captured on the 9-1-1 screen; however, it is the dispatchers's responsibility to verify that you are calling from the location he/she has in front of them.

Answer all questions. Although you may think answering some of the questions is a waste of time, the call taker is trained to ask certain questions pertaining to the emergency you are reporting. This does not delay the response of Police/Fire or EMS to your call.

Do Not Hang Up. There are certain circumstances that just getting the information from you about a call is not enough. The call taker will have you stay on the line with them to answer questions pertinent to the incident you are reporting. There may be questions that the officer or medical personnel responding may need that was not ascertained prior to them being dispatched to your location. It is important to keep the phone line open between you and the call taker.

Be prepared to give descriptions and license numbers. Descriptions of persons involved in your emergency will be important for the responding units; be conscious of what is going on around you in order to give this information when asked by the call taker. In some circumstances, you may be asked for a description of vehicles or if you were able to read the license plate number of a vehicle(s) involved in your emergency.
